Microsoft confirmed yesterday that it will include a free version of Office on all Windows 8 RT tablets to be released October 26 this year. Microsoft is calling it Office Home & Student 2013 RT.
Windows RT is Microsoft’s term for its ARM-based tablets which are lower-priced, aimed at consumers and come with longer battery life. The second type of PC or tablet runs on Intel processors and is aimed at businesses; it is named Windows 8 and is higher-priced. It therefore contains more Apps that will be used and needed by enterprises. This is why the free Office on the windows RT does not contain apps like Outlook for email so as not to to tempt businesses to purchase this instead of RT.
Aside for a few differences from Office Home & Student 2013, Office Home & Student 2013 RT really has all the features consumers might need and none they’ll miss. This free Office will however not be present in the release in October but rather will be available for automatic update via Windows Update sometime between November and January.
This free Office is limited to Windows 8 RT devices.
