Microsoft Office free on Windows 8 RT

toshiba windows 8 slider

Microsoft confirmed yesterday that it will include a free version of Office on all Windows 8 RT tablets to be released October 26 this year. Microsoft is calling it Office Home & Student 2013 RT.

Windows RT is Microsoft’s term for its ARM-based tablets which are lower-priced, aimed at consumers and come with longer battery life. The  second type of PC or tablet runs on Intel processors and is aimed at businesses; it is named Windows 8 and is higher-priced. It therefore contains more Apps that will be used and needed by enterprises. This is why the free Office on the windows RT does not contain apps like Outlook for email so as not to to tempt businesses to purchase this instead of RT.

Aside for a few differences from Office Home & Student 2013, Office Home & Student 2013 RT really has all the features consumers might need and none they’ll miss. This free Office will however not be present in the release in October but rather will be available for automatic update via Windows Update sometime between November and January.

This free Office is limited to Windows 8 RT devices.

Microsoft Surface: Surprise! Surprise!

Microsoft Surface with Touch Cover

Mere days after Samsung revealed its Galaxy S III, Microsoft makes known the latest addition to their hardware. Uncommonly secretive about this product unlike Apple (masters of secrecy) – it is reported to have been originally birthed in an “underground bunker” by a special hardware unit before moving to a more conventional building with an ‘airlock’ door.

Office 2013

Office 2013 is Microsoft’s latest technology application software and it’s slated for release next year. Built to use new Windows 8 OS (to be released in October), Microsoft says when released it will be on subscription services and each new subscription offer will include the new 2013 editions of the Office applications — Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access.

Windows 8: A ‘bomb’ like Vista?

Windows 8: A ‘bomb’ like vista?

As each day passes, there are mixed feelings about the newly launched Windows 8. Some have termed it another bomb like Vista, others think there’s great advantage to its dual efficiency. And even others welcome it’s new technology, especially the server OS. Here’s what I have gathered from various reviews.

Windows ‘Live’ is dead?

microsoft funeral iphone

”Windows Live” refers to software for your PC (Windows Live Essentials) as well as a suite of web-based services (Hotmail, SkyDrive, and Messenger), and your account relationship with Microsoft (Windows Live ID). And, a host of other offers……  The naming confusion is one of the reasons Microsoft had to adopt new names for their services and decided to kill off ”Windows Live”. Microsoft account is now the identity service for individuals who use Microsoft products and services. You can use your Microsoft account to sign in to your Windows 8 PC, and then use the same account to connect to services like Xbox LIVE, Zune, and the Windows 8 app store. You can sign up for a Microsoft account with any e-mail address.

How cool or perhaps how hot is this new technology going to be? It boasts of a new Metro-style interface that is designed for touchscreen, mouse, keyboard, and pen input. It has support for the  ARM processor architecture  in addition to the previously supported  x86microprocessors from Intel and AMD. It has a server counterpart codenamed Windows Server 8.
